Best Gun Safe
Looking for the best gun safe? After a lot of research and reading a lot of gun safe reviews I have put together a list of the top rifle and handgun safes that won’t break the bank. I was amazed at all the different models out there and then you also have to split it between rifle and pistol safes. Well, don’t worry!
Way Too Many Hours Researching And Gathering Data!
So I am a bit of a research freak and when I started looking at buying a gun safe the Excel spreadsheet came out!
I created this list as I was looking to buy my first gun (a shotgun) and needed to keep it someplace safe, where it is inaccessible to children and also protected from potential burglars. So I thought I would quickly pop unto Amazon and buy a safe, but like everything else, with gun safes you get what you pay for so my supposed quick analysis turned into a very complex data gathering exercise…
Do I want to rifle or pistol safe – easy one! What security features does it need to have? What about construction? Number of bolts securing the door? Tamper proofing, Whether it opens with a code, key, combination, fingerprint or all of them? Does it need to be fireproof? Length of warranty? What size do I need? How much can I afford to spend? And the important one: can I get a good deal for the safe I eventually choose?
As you can see my research quickly spun out of control and my spreadsheet filled up with rows and rows of different criteria, characteristics, etc.

Helping You Choose The Best Safe
The first thing you need to consider is the size of the safe that you want to buy. A good safe will do more than just hold your guns, it will probably end up holding other valuables too. It may be tempting to purchase a small, simple safe at first, but this could be a false economy. A good safe will last a lifetime, and during that lifetime your gun collection is probably going to grow – so, buy a bigger safe than you think you will need.
It is a good idea to buy a gun safe that is fire resistant. Do not skimp on this protection. Some “fire proofing” is fairly ineffective, so do your homework before you hand over any money. Some people prefer to purchase two safes, and to keep their guns in the main safe, then place other valuables – such as licenses and ownership documents, in a second, smaller safe that has commercial grade fire protection. This double layer of protection is usually sufficient to ensure that essential documents are well protected.
There are many different brands of gun safe, and each one has its own benefits and downsides. Browning is popular because of its proprietary door-mounted rifle rack, and is the obvious choice for rifle owners. In contrast, Ft. Knox and Amsec are both renowned for their high quality fire protection, so are a good choice if you think that there is a fire risk in the area you will be storing the safe. Brown’s safes are very luxurious looking, and offer commercial-quality burglary protection, and Zanotti’s modular design means that it is easy for the safe owner to move the safe around. There are no right or wrong answers when it comes to choosing a safe brand. It is up to you to do your homework and make your own decisions based on your personal priorities.
Many cheap safes are not particularly secure, and really act as a theft deterrent rather than an actual anti-theft mechanism. While this is OK if you are keeping a safe in a concealed area in your own home, and simply want to stop your children from accessing your guns, it is not OK if the safe is going to be located in a visible area of your property, or on a non-residential site. If a safe can be opened using simple hand-tools, then there is almost no point in using it. A high quality safe will be equipped with relockers that will keep the safe locked if it is attacked. Relockers are sturdy pins that will activate if the safe is tampered with, and cannot be unlocked unless the thief spends hours drilling into the safe. A small safe may have two relockers in it, while a bigger safe could have as many as ten.
Keeping The Safe Secure
One thing that many people fail to consider when they purchase a safe is how easy the safe will be to move. If someone decides that they want to gain access to the contents of your safe, then there is always the possibility that they could simply steal the safe and open it at their leisure. To prevent this, be sure to remove the pallet from the safe. If you do not do this, then a thief could simply use a pallet jack to pick the safe up. Do not make the mistake of assuming that the safe cannot be moved because it is heavy. Bolt it down properly to keep it secure.
